October 3rd & 5th Town Halls

I attended the town halls this month in Wilton and Amherstview. Town halls are an opportunity to listen to residents concerns in a casual setting while at the same time outlining future goals for the township. At these sessions presentations were made by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor focusing on the refining the Strategic Plan for the remainder of this Council as well as how budget planning works. To receive information and updates on the strategic plan process register at the following link.

October 14th Fire Training Centre Open House

Loyalist Township Emergency Services hosted a public open house at the Training Centre. Presented in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week this year’s FPW campaign, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking. Shelby Kramp-Neuman our Member of Parliament joined Mayor Jim Hegadorn and I at the event.

October 15th, Community Free Skate

As part of Loyalist Townships 25th Anniversary celebration a free skate was held at the WJ Henderson Recreation Centre. A fun filled couple of hours with hot chocolate for all and prizes for a random few. Watch the township website for future free skates sponsored by generous supporters of our community.

October 18th Classroom to Community

Taking me back to my teaching days I had a chance to interact with about 300 grade 5/6's from our local schools during Municipal Government Week. There was lots of energy in the WJ Henderson Recreation Centre for the local agencies to enjoy. In short sessions to the many groups we saw Councillor Willis and I did our best to outline the role of local council in the community. Thanks to all the groups who were involved and to the staff who organized the first of what we will hope is many days like this.

October 23rd Legacies of Loyalist

With several members of the community I had a chance to screen Legacies of Loyalist. It is an oral history, storytelling initiative intended to capture the insight into the daily lives of those before us. The stories depict an array of both simple and significant moments in time from our communities past that you cannot find in a history textbook. It was nice to catch up with many community members including a representation of past council members from our three founding municipalities. The entire film can be viewed on You Tube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2APKUzh4hQ

October 23rd 19th Session of Council

The following is from the "Council In Brief" which can be found on the township website.

Delegations and Presentations

Staff Sergeant Ashley, City of Belleville Police – The CAMSafe program is a free registry that allows businesses, industries, residents and municipalities that have security cameras to register their property on a secure platform. The program is divided into two very distinctive and secure sides, the public side where users register their property/cameras, and the law enforcement side where the location of all cameras in a specific area are available for the police. Video evidence usually plays a key role in solving any crime or act of vandalism.

Imagine My Sustainable Community Initiatives

Council approved the implementation of the Babcock Mill Reading Garden, a purple multi-use pathway along Main Street in Odessa, and a rainbow crosswalk of Main Street in Odessa immediately west of the West Street intersection and authorized the transfer of $50,000 in General Rate Funds from Cost Centre 180027 - Amherst Island Flood Damage Repair to Cost Centre 170023 - Bridge, Battery, South, Cross Road rehabilitation.

This initiative was the result of a class project by Mr. Collins class at Odessa Public School during the spring of this year.

Quinte Conservation - Memorandum of Understanding for Non-Mandatory Programs and Services

Council approved By-law 2023-075, being a by-law to authorize an agreement with Quinte Conservation for the provision of non-mandatory programs and services.

CAMsafe

Council authorized Loyalist Township staff to register Township security cameras with CAMSafe and to advertise and promote the CAMSafe program to Loyalist Township residents. Having personally experienced auto theft in the past week I feel this is a valuable tool. For more information go to https://camsafe.ca/

October 29th Trunk or Treat

The Odessa Agricultural Society and Loyalist Township put on this Halloween events for the young and old of the township. Trick-or-treating took place in a safe accessible manner with crats and games in the Palace. Many local community members took part handing out candy and treats throughout the gathering. Approximately 3,500 people took part which made it one of the largest gatherings in the township this year.

A reminder that our accessible transportation web page www.loyalist.ca/accessibletransit is packed with information so please provide the link to anyone who is looking for more information.

On air with CJAI 101.3 Amherst Island Radio in the noon-2:00pm time slot on Thursdays. Spinning some tunes interspersed with some local talk. I will take a break on November 8th as I attend to business as a councillor that day.
